Belvidere Science Curriculum

At Belvidere Primary school we use the Engage primary science scheme of work supported by ‘The Plan’ documents. The Engaging Science scheme meets the needs of the 2014 National Curriculum and was developed with support from schools.

The Engaging Science primary science scheme of work and our ethos is based on the principles that:

  • Science is best taught through practical sessions and investigation.
  • Pupils should be encouraged to think both scientifically and creatively.
  • Curiosity, wonder, humour and even disgust are emotions that build engagement in science.
  • Science should take advantage of the many opportunities the outdoor environment offers to learn science in context – we plan visits and visitors to support the curriculum.
  • The teaching of science should be rigorous and ensure that pupils of all abilities make progress.
  • Assessment in science should be based on what pupils demonstrate they can do in lessons rather than on tests.

In EYFS we use the Plan documents to introduce children to the foundational knowledge of science, included in the Statutory Framework for EYFS, that they will need in order to be well-placed to access the science National Curriculum in England at Key Stage 1.
